This is maybe one of the most frequently asked questions: “Can I lose weight if I practice Krav Maga?” Our answer to that is: depends.
Now, before you click away in despair, because the answer was not yes, think that, just like in any other physical activity, when you measure weight loss results, you have to take into account some factors.
This is the case with Krav Maga. We need to take into account these factors and we are not going to sugar coat and lie about the answer. (like many others do, unfortunately).
Here are the 3 main factors that go into assessing if Krav Maga can help you lose weight:
1. Your diet.
Probably one of the most important factors, nutrition is the key in how your results are going to look like. As many of us now know, as long as you burn more than you eat, you are going to lose weight. So, if you are going to have a low calorie/restrictive diet you are going to certainly lose weight.
At Krav Maga Systems, we believe in the saying that you can not outrun a bad diet. But, with that in mind, we also do not believe in diets. We believe in balance.
The most important factor to living a healthy life is to stray away from restrictive and confusing diets and instead to start developing healthy eating habits. Here are some guidelines we feel are essential in obtaining a healthy lifestyle:
- Get the majority of your daily calories from fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, nuts and seeds.
- Consume a variety of foods.
- Don’t drive yourself crazy, instead control your portions and indulge once in a while.
- Eat plenty of produce, like fruits and vegetables. Try as much as possible to buy organic and fresh.
- Limit or eliminate grains. If you chose to keep them in your diet opt for whole grains.
- Limit or eliminate sugar. Keep an eye out for foods with added sugars.
- Eat more good fats (fish, seeds and nuts) and avoid bad fats (trans fats found in hydrogenated vegetable oils used in many processed foods)
- Limit your alcohol and sugary drinks (soda)
2. How much you weigh.
How much you weigh before you start your training is also going to have a big impact in how much progress you will have. People who weigh more have a greater mass than less heavier persons. So when they will start their training, heavier people will benefit from biophysics and in result they will burn more calories during a class.
3. Getting toned.
Probably one of our favorite parts of this subject is the getting toned part. If one thing is for sure, it is that Krav Maga is going to get you toned. We’ve had incredible transformation of people losing weight but we’ve also had incredible transformation of people getting fit. Most Krav Maga classes have a warm up before training. Combining the cardio of the warm-up with the full-body compound movements of the training we believe you get one of the most kick-ass workouts there is.
Krav Maga will get you more toned, fit and stronger.
Warning: Getting fitter means gaining muscle mass and conditioning your body. You may experience some weight gain at first but remember that muscle weighs more than fat!
The take home
We want to inspire more and more people to choose a healthy, balanced life and be happy and confident with their body. Shun away from organizations that promise you an incredible weight loss transformation, as they should advise balance and explain all the factors involved in this process. Finally, just remember that life is more than weight, it’s about being healthy, active and happy.
