Generally, training in Krav Maga and Martial Arts is relatively safe.
If you are a qualified Krav Maga or Martial Arts Instructor, your training would’ve given you the tools to create a training environment that minimises risks and a teaching format that prevents injury. When these elements are carried out correctly, injury does not usually happen. However, Relying on something to never happen, isn’t the best tactical approach – as with all things self-defence: Preparation is Key! That’s why anyone who is in the role of ‘Instructor’ or ‘Coach’ in any self-defence, martial art or combat sport needs to have a basic understanding of what to do.
It’s not just what ‘could’ happen in training that you’ll need to deal with.
Some students come in with pre-diagonsed conditions and injuries. These conditions can become aggravated in training, and (if they are medically cleared to participate), these conditions shouldn’t stop the student from learning.
So, the moral of the story is to know what to do – whether you’ll use it or not!

How you and your school will benefit from First Aid training:
Some research indicates first aid training not only minimises the impact of injuries, it can actually reduce in-class injuries because ‘First Aiders’ can pro-actively warn for and plan to avoid potentially dangerous training practices. Other benefits include:
- An increased safety-aware culture in your gym/school – more people on the look-out and therefore helping to bring down the number of accidents.
- It saves lives, particularly where there are grave injuries and it is critical that immediate action is taken.
- Qualified ‘First Aiders’ know exactly what’s in their first aid kits, how to use the contents and the various ways to react in an emergency.
- The training gives First Aiders critical knowledge and the confidence to effectively manage an emergency without fear or confusion.
- They learn how to use painkillers, bandage injuries and control blood flow.
- They are more employable: First aid is a life-skill and can greatly enhance your CV and job applications. Being a first aid responder requires key skills which all employers love: communication skills, leadership & team working. You can demonstrate these skills by learning first aid.
Doing a First Aid training course:
A lot of first aid providers aim to make it easy for participants to learn first aid by providing online courses. There are also specific courses online for Martial Arts Instructors and Students. These are great if you can’t arrange face-to-face sessions, or if you have a busy schedule. Others can come to you and teach you the theory and methods of what to do for specific problems, all in one day (expecting that you’ll remember and know how to handle these problems under the pressure of a real situation). You might be a bit like us in thinking that theory just isn’t enough. It’s an essential part of Krav Maga to test what you learn, and this is why we’ve created a First Aid for Krav Maga and Martial Arts course. The course is designed to give you the peace of mind to know you CAN deal with common Krav Maga and Martial Arts injuries under the conditions of a real class. It is the perfect course for any self-defence/martial arts/combat sports instructor, coach or organisation.
